Anyway, I knew the problem wasn’t so much the audio chipset (well, yes, it does have an impact) but the lack luster MIDI instrument samples that ship with Windows 7 which the included “Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth” uses. I do still have the Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro that was in my old system however, I just never felt like going through the effort of trying to get it to work in this system due to its age and probably limited support in Windows 7 64-bit. Regular MP3s and other digital music formats sound fine on it but MIDI files sounded like crap for the most part compared to my old system. This new system has Windows 7 Pro/SP1 64-bit and has a Realtek ALC892 Audio chipset in it. I've read people having same type of MIDI related problems w/ A2ZSNb. mid files (in addition to my real music projects which necessitate more setup labors), editing. I realize that if I have to I can map to Maple and the Audigy synth in another window and connect that to Maple, but that's too complicated I want the ability to do quick loading and editing of. If I select the Windows MIDI mapper, Sonar tells me I didn't select anything, even though I selected the Audigy device in the Sound control panel. When I view the MIDI devices, I get the Maple virtual MIDI ports, and the Windows MIDI mapper is listed, but not the Audigy device. But Sonar doesn't recognize the card's MIDI synth at all. The card has Vienna sound fonts, etc., as all who mess with the cheap SB line of cards know, and the MIDI Out port to the Audigy synth seems to be recognized in FL Studio. Along with my hundreds of dollars worth of DXi's and VSTs, I would also like to do basic MIDI editing using my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook PCMCIA card.
